I have been interested in art most of my life. When I was a child I traced cartoons and comic books. I used an old family typewriter to write captions for pictures that I cut out from magazines and newspapers and glued them to paper. Often I stapled the papers together to make books.
As I got older I took an interest in street signs, letter forms and the enormous amount of signage around us. At the same time I took an interest in the human figure and portraiture. I drew all the time, copied the masters, read art history books and watched films on artists. I did everything I could to further my knowledge of art and art history. I started asking other artists I knew about materials and methods and shared my work with them. This was incredibly helpful. Eventually I decided I should seek professional training.
I applied and was accepted to Parson School of Design. It was there that I began experimenting with the medium of collage while continuing to work with painting and typography. Training opened doors of expression that my earlier work lacked.
After graduation I continued to experiment with collage including images and all varieties of texts. Sometimes I drew or painted the images I used. Other times the materials were found. When painting I usually use oil paints. I want my work to be imperfect, like life. I pick subject matter that is personal using both my own experience and that of those close to me. Regardless of the subject matter I always aim to please the eye.
